Norman D. Nuttall
Owner, Nuttall Sewing Centers
1932 —

Norman Nuttall began his career with Singer, managing a handful of stores in the Salt Lake area. While working for Singer, he learned the home sewing business and was intrigued by the Swiss-made Bernina sewing machine. Norm saw it was cutting edge and predicted it would continue to adapt to meet the changing needs of sewers. His interest, coupled with the desire to own a business, convinced him to go out on his own. In the late 1960’s, he purchased a dealership and opened shop in a small storefront in downtown Salt Lake City. The business was primarily run by Norm and his wife, Sandra. Over the years, the operation has grown to seven locations.

Norm’s business has thrived because he offers the very latest products and technology. He trains his employees well and has implemented innovative concepts in store operations. His successful operation of multiple store locations comes from his vast experience and expertise in salesmanship, but more importantly, Norm has the unique ability to teach his sales skills to others. His salespeople demonstrate products to perfection. Norm knows well a great demonstration wins the sale. By sharing his knowledge and success, he has strengthened the entire industry.

Norm was recognized recently as the top Bernina dealer in the world. The award was based on Nuttall Sewing CentersÆ annual sales, which totaled approximately $5 million in 1993. He received this award during a ceremony at Bernina University. As important to Norm was the standing ovation he received from his peers.

The long list of other achievement awards Norm has received includes Bernina Dealer of the Year — Western U.S. from 1975-1985, Bernina Dealer of the Year from Bernina of America for 1986-1993, the White Outstanding Achievement Award for 1990, 1991 and 1993, Citation for Excellence from Bernina of Switzerland, numerous Awards of Merit from the Utah Vocational Association, and being named an Honorary 4-H Club Member.

Helping people develop their skills by sharing his knowledge and experience is what keeps Norm active in the industry. For him, the business is more fun today than it has ever been.
