John C. Johnston
Godfreys
1918-

Over the past 60 years, John C. Johnston has made tremendous contributions to the vacuum cleaner industry. He was born July 31, 1918, and grew up to become partner with Godfrey Cohen, founder of the company that bears his name, Godfreys. In 1939, John established his first store in Adelaide, and in 1963, his first store in Sydney opened.

In 1995, John opened the largest retail showroom in Australia. The total area, 450,000 square feet, was devoted entirely to vacuum cleaners and vacuum cleaner parts. In 1997, John opened his 75th store.

From one small store in Melbourne, John built a network of 75 retail stores, making the trading name of Godfreys synonomous with vacuum cleaners in Australia. Godfreys is now the largest retailer of vacuum cleaners in Australia and is the Australian distributor of Plastiflex, Hayden, Modern Day, Ametek, as well as most European manufacturers.

In addition, John established a wholesaling company, Vacspare, which is the largest distributor of spare parts and consumables in Australia.

Proving to be an accomplished professional of the industry, John was named National Retailer of the Year in 1996 and in 1997. The Prime Minister of Australia presented both of the awards to him.
