On the Road Again....

Traveling with fellow sewers is simply a blast!

The American Sewing Guild offers sewers the option of several travel destinations each year, from exotic Hong Kong to the fabric districts of New York, and the sewing mecca of the Pacific Northwest.

In addition to sewers, these travel adventures are also attended by spouses who support their mates’ indulgences, and by non-sewing friends with a passion for travel.

Small business owners are also welcome, especially in Hong Kong where they often find new sourcing for their shops or product manufacturing. The Hong Kong garment district offers trims and findings by the gross, as well as bolt pricing on fabrics.

The Northwest tour visits Pendleton Woolen Mills to see the entire fabric manufacturing process, from shorn sheep to finished plaids, and several local designers. The Hong Kong tour visits a costume shop that outfits amusement park characters in elaborate garb, and also designs elaborate offerings for the Chinese ballet and opera, as well as Chinese New Year garb.

For more information on upcoming tours, visit www.asg.org and click on “Sew Much Fun Tours.” The Northwest tour dates are September 2-8, 2008, and the next Hong Kong tour is February 10-18, 2009. Registration deadlines are usually three months prior, but tours fill fast, so participation is first-come, first-serve.
