Making “knowledge management” routine

Unless your organization has something formal in place through which employees can share their knowledge, expertise, and on-the-job discoveries, your department loses important and essential information every time a staffer moves to another position, department or company.

Here’s a great low-tech way to prevent the loss: In weekly or monthly meetings, ask everyone in the group to share a recent workplace experience. It can be a success, a surprise, a failure, an error, whatever. Then ask them what they learned from the situation, and what they might do differently as a result. Let people ask questions and share their own solutions. The discussions will draw your team closer together and the resulting informal “training” will pay off in productivity.
