Riccar awards one lucky salesperson with the $10,000 Big Check Promotion

Imagine arriving at work one day and discovering a celebration just for you -- complete with balloons, champagne, and a giant check for $10,000! That’s exactly what happened to Dennis Croak of The Henry Company in Merrillville, IN, during the Big Check Promotion from Riccar Vacuums.

“I didn’t know what to say,” said Croak, who was “absolutely” surprised about being the Grand Prize winner. “A lot of independent salespeople visit me in the middle of the day, so when I heard the door, that’s who I was expecting. Then I saw them -- with cameras and balloons and champagne -- and I thought, ‘Now, what the heck is going on?’”

On October 29, the president of Riccar America, Craig Neal, flew from Fullerton, CA, to Indiana to surprise Croak at work. Along with Neal were John Kaido, Senior VP of Home Floor Care, and Joy Petty, Director of Marketing. Both are from Riccar’s parent company, Tacony Corporation, which is based in St. Louis.

“It was a lot of fun,” Neal said about giving away the check, “But it is especially fun when the dealer is such a strong supporter of Riccar.”

“Describing me as ‘giddy’ would probably be an understatement,” said Petty about the trip. “The anticipation of knowing we were going to make someone’s day in a big way and be part of a story he will be telling for the rest of his life -- combined with all of the unknowns, such as if the winner would even be at work that day -- made for a most exciting adventure!”

“At Riccar we feel it’s important to reward our retailers not only with the occasional sales contest, but with significant and consistent retail profit margins,” said Kaido. “The reason we feel this is important is simple; we know our vacuum cleaners don’t sell themselves. We believe it’s essential that people are rewarded for their strong efforts.”

“Every Riccar vacuum that we sell is through a dealer recommendation or word of mouth through friends,” added Neal, “But either way, it all starts with a dealer’s effort.”

“We know without the dealers’ demos and personal recommendations of Riccar vacuums, we would not exist,” Petty explained. “To reward dealers for all of those demos done on a daily basis and the compelling endorsements routinely given to customers about Riccar vacuums, we decided it would be fun to have a contest with big grand prize.”

Petty said that the idea came from a similar promotion that Riccar offered several years ago, where they awarded a lucky retailer with $10,000. However, Petty was inspired by the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes and their popular Superbowl ads where people are surprised at their doorsteps with a big check, cameras and plenty of excitement!

“Because the big check was too big to fly with, we shipped it to a Kinkos near the vacuum store,” Petty said. “You get a lot of attention when you are walking around a Kinkos with a $10,000 6-foot-wide check!”

“I’ve got the big check up on the wall,” Croak added.

To enter, Riccar dealers were asked to simply send in completed warranty cards for every upright, canister and central vacuum sold from August 1 – September 30, 2007. Riccar received over 80 pounds of entry forms and chose the winner at random.

In addition to the Grand Prize winner, retailers were chosen to receive a second prize of $5,000, a third prize of $2,500, and a fourth prize of $1,000. What’s more, 20 retailers were also chosen to receive $100. (See sidebar for a complete list of winners.)

“The winners have all been very excited,” Neal said, “But Dennis showed us that he really makes Riccar his go-to brand when he told us, ‘It’s great to be able to sell a vacuum when you know every single person that purchases it from you will be happy with their choice.’”
