Creative talents emerged at the 2006 EYDY™ Competition
More than 300 audience members watched in amazement as young designers took the runway to show off their creative talents during the 2006 Emerging Young Designers (EYDY™) Fashion Show at the Round Bobbin Expo in Saint Charles, MO.
This annual event is held at the Round Bobbin Expo in September each year. This year, 63 students with 160 garments from 25 colleges in nine states entered the competition. Finalists in the competition ended with 11 colleges in six states with 60 garments. Junior and senior students were eligible to compete in this event.
The 2nd Annual EYDY™ title was awarded to Kelly Emick, a student from Stephens College in Columbia, MO. Congratulations to Kelly for her accomplishment and creative vision!
Other winners of the EYDY™ for the following categories were:
Art to Wear/Evening Wear: 1st place - Alyssa Stokesbary from University of Northern Iowa, 2nd place - Mathia Colley from Stephens College, 3rd place - Andrew Shirk from University of Kansas.
Coats/Suits: 1st place - Stephanie Link from Stephens College, 2nd place - Misty Ellison from Missouri State University, 3rd place - Ann Marie Spihlmann from Illinois State University.
Sportswear/Daywear: 1st place - Meghan Petty from University of Missouri-Columbia, 2nd place - Milly Hoffman from Stephens College, 3rd place - Christine Carlton from Oklahoma State.
Activewear/Swimwear: 1st place Kelly Emich from Stephens College - 2nd place, Morgan Peterson from Stephens College - 3rd place - Kathryn May Dix from Stephens College.
Additional awards were also presented. The Fashion Group International, St. Louis Chapter, presented the Rising Star Award to Stephanie Link, and the Best of Show was awarded to Kelly Emick.
“It was a wonderful experience for the designers and audience,” commented SDTA President Judy Patterson. “This venue created a wonderful place for the audience to view the styles, trends and the designer’s phenomenal talent. We look forward to bringing this competition back to St. Charles in 2007!”
Students were judged during the competition on various points, including construction, workmanship, fit, creativity, originality, effectiveness of design, marketability/reflects trends, and textile usage.
A panel of five judges selected the finalist. This year’s judges included Linda Lee of The Sewing Workshop, Connie Crawford of Fashions by Coni, Jenn Feagans of Weissman’s Designs for Dance and the 2005 EYDY™ winner, Mary Allen who is a designer, and Jolene Streiff of Bowregards.
