Credit card processing safety tips to prevent fraudulent transactions

The best way to protect yourself and your customers from fraud is to follow recommended transaction procedures. Make yourself familiar with the contents of the Visa® Merchant Resource Center and MasterCard® Merchant.

Regardless of the type of transactions you process, these six steps can help prevent fraud.

For card-present transactions, watch out for customers who:

  1. Purchase a large amount of merchandise without regard to size, style, color, or price.
  2. Do not ask questions on major purchases.
  3. Try to distract or rush you during the sale.
  4. Make purchases and leave the store, but then return to make more purchases.
  5. Make large purchases just after the store opens or as it is closing.
  6. Refuse free delivery for large items.

For online transactions investigate red flags such as:

  1. An anonymous e-mail.
  2. Mismatched shipping and billing addresses.
  3. Foreign orders or shipments.
  4. All lower case information.
  5. Unusually large orders, rush orders or high ticket orders.
  6. Multiples of the same item.
