Singer Sewing Machines

Singer’s history dates back to 1851 when Isaac Singer and a new York lawyer, Edward B. Clark, formed the I.M. Singer & Company. Although many inventors tried to make a machine that could sew a secure stitch, it was Isaac Merritt Singer who finally designed the world’s first practical sewing machine. In 1850, Singer was visiting a shop in Boston and observed that the owners were struggling with the design of a sewing machine. Singer offered his advice on how to solve their problems and was asked to draw up a design. In only 11 days, Singer created and perfected his first machine. He was granted a patent in 1851 and set in motion the creation of the manufacturing giant that SINGER® has become.

Since 1851, the name Singer has been synonymous with sewing. Awareness of SINGER® sewing machines is near universal (92 percent) among both current and lapsed sewers.1

The spirit of practical design and creative innovation that characterized the company at its beginning continues today as they develop products for every level of sewing. Singer has celebrated many firsts, including the world’s first zigzag machine, the first electronic sewing machine and the first sewing and embroidery machine of its kind with an embroidery unit powered by a PC.

Consumers have grown to trust and rely on Singer to create innovative sewing machines. That is why…
• More consumers own and use SINGER sewing machines than all other brands combined.2
