Drainvac
Studies have shown that two-thirds of the population cleans because they have to, not because they want to. People tend to find cleaning too strenuous and complicated. As a result, they often call upon cleaning services for some of the toughest jobs. That’s exactly the kind of work Drainvac founder Conrad Sévigny was doing before inventing his revolutionary central vacuum system.
It all began with his carpet-cleaning service. While he worked, his clients noticed that the extracted soiled water was being directed to a tank, which then had to be emptied manually each time it was full. They wondered if there might be a way to avoid that last step. That’s when Sévigny had an idea that would change the vacuum industry.
Sévigny’s prototypical carpet-cleaning water extractor first saw the light in 1982, and it was armed with patented automatic drain technology. The set-up was easy: place the extractor tank on top of a toilet bowl and attach the hose to a nearby tap. The soiled water extracted from the carpet is directed to the tank. Once the tank is full, the water is automatically flushed into the sewer system. Then, the extractor restarts itself to continue cleaning the carpet. The whole process was simplified, not to mention quicker.
By 1983, Sévigny’s carpet-cleaning service had bloomed into a family business based in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, and the development of a new system was stirring. An automated wet and dry, built-in central vacuum system for domestic and commercial properties was finally put on the market in 1985. Shortly after, the system enjoyed international recognition as an innovation in maintenance-free cleaning, since the tank never needs to be emptied and there is no bag or filter to replace.
The development of a conventional vacuum cleaner in 1989 was a natural evolution. The launch of the 1000, 2000 and 3000 Series by Drainvac in the year 2000 was perhaps the company’s most progressive move. The 1000, 2000 and 3000 Series is a more compact built-in central vacuum with a filter, designed to fit in an apartment, a regular home, a cottage, or even an RV. It’s very quiet, sanitary, and in spite of its size, it’s amazingly powerful.
A central vacuum cleaner that sucks up both wet and dry messes was a novel idea, but what people really want is something that works. Because Sévigny has such a close relationship with his clients, he developed his central vacuums with their needs in mind. To ensure maximum cleaning efficiency, Drainvac’s vacuums boasts up to 1236 air watts. Each type of filtration – permanent, paper bag, cyclonic, cartridge with bag, and water – guarantees that dust and debris are solidly trapped inside the vacuum with no chance of flying out into the air. Plus, Drainvac’s entire range of products is durable, with each motor guaranteed for 10 years.
Today, Drainvac products are distributed in over 20 countries worldwide, with important sales in Europe and a burgeoning Asian market on the rise. In 2002, Drainvac relocated to larger headquarters based in St. Hilaire, Quebec, to meet higher demands and to increase production.
Drainvac’s future seems limitless. While it remains a family business, the enterprise continues to grow at an impressive rate. With its stellar customer service and its drive to innovate, Drainvac still has much territory to conquer. Keep your eyes open for Sévigny’s next original invention.
